Council Tax applies in England, Wales and Scotland; Northern Ireland uses domestic rates. Record the correct charge for both addresses and establish who is responsible during any overlap. A postcode or property price alone is not enough to calculate your exact bill.
Notify the right organisation
Use the local council's moving process for Council Tax. In Northern Ireland, follow Land & Property Services guidance and check whether the owner or occupier is responsible in your circumstances. Rental agreements should be checked alongside the relevant rules.
Keep the records clear
- Departure and arrival dates for each property.
- Account references and submitted notifications.
- The actual annual bill or confirmed charge.
- Any separately assessed discount, exemption or relief.
The overlap tool prorates entered figures for planning; that illustration is not a liability decision or a substitute for the authority's bill. Compare the result with statements when they arrive and query discrepancies directly.
Official starting points are Council Tax, the Northern Ireland guide to rates and occupying and leaving a property in Northern Ireland.
Put it into practice
Use the council tax and rates moving planner to organise your own figures or next steps. Keep its assumptions alongside your plan.
