Meter readings and condition photographs create a useful record of the handover. Take them as close to departure and arrival as practical, and record the address, date and meter identifier alongside the display. Keep the originals somewhere you can retrieve after the move.
Capture a readable record
- Photograph the whole meter and a clear view of each relevant reading.
- Include separate registers where the meter has more than one.
- Note units and labels without guessing how the supplier interprets them.
- Record areas of existing damage or disputed condition with context and close-ups.
Submit readings and moving details through the supplier's own process, then save the confirmation. Do not assume a photograph alone has notified the provider or that every smart meter removes the need for a handover record.
At a rental, compare the check-in or check-out inventory and raise discrepancies promptly in writing. Avoid photographing other people's private information unnecessarily.
