Books, tools and other dense items can make an ordinary box too heavy long before it is full. Use smaller strong boxes and test the weight as you pack. The right size is one the people handling it can move safely, within any stated packaging limit.
Build a stable load
Keep books supported and protect valuable editions according to their material and condition. Fill unused space with light cushioning rather than more heavy objects. Do not combine a dense collection with fragile belongings that could be crushed.
Handle tools carefully
- Cover sharp edges and secure loose components.
- Keep small parts in labelled containers.
- Check the mover's rules for batteries, fuel and other restricted contents.
- Arrange suitable help for workshop machinery or equipment beyond ordinary handling.
Mark heavy boxes clearly and identify their destination. Place them on a stable surface rather than balancing a stack in a corridor. A trolley can help on an appropriate route, but steps, uneven ground and doorway thresholds still need planning. Tell the removal crew about unusually heavy collections during the survey so staffing and equipment can be chosen before moving day.
