A room-by-room checklist makes the inventory more reliable and keeps packing decisions small. Give each destination room a name or colour that everyone understands. If the new layout is different, label for the new room rather than the room the box came from.
Living spaces and bedrooms
Record furniture, lamps, electronics, books, ornaments, curtains and loose items in drawers. Check under beds and behind large furniture. Keep enough clothing, bedding and toiletries for the final days and first night. Set aside furniture fittings and photograph cable connections before dismantling.
Kitchen and bathroom
Use up food before packing and check the mover's restrictions on liquids and perishables. Protect glass, ceramics and sharp objects carefully. Keep medicines under your control and make basic washing and food preparation possible throughout the move. Follow appliance instructions for preparation and transport.
Easily forgotten areas
- Loft, basement and under-stairs storage.
- Garage, shed, garden and outdoor cupboards.
- Coat pockets, utility drawers and charging stations.
- Belongings at work, school, repair shops or someone else's home.
- Bins and items agreed to remain with the property.
Close each room deliberately
Inspect cupboards after the last box leaves, photograph condition where relevant and mark the room complete in the inventory. Keep a short list of items that remain in use so they can be checked on moving morning.
At the destination, display matching room labels and direct boxes to their final room. It is much easier to unpack a coherent kitchen group than to search through a hallway full of boxes marked miscellaneous.
