Decluttering is a decision about the home you are moving into, not a test of how much you can throw away. Begin with the new space and your everyday needs. It is easier to choose what earns a place when you know the available storage, room sizes and likely routine.

Sort in manageable areas

Use five categories: keep, sell, donate, recycle and dispose. Work through one cupboard or small area at a time. Keep a separate unresolved pile with a deadline so difficult decisions do not stall every room. Check shared belongings with the other person before making arrangements.

Start with the bulky items

Measure large furniture against the new rooms and access route. Compare the likely sale proceeds with collection effort and transport or storage costs. Photograph items accurately, describe damage and set a collection deadline that leaves time for a fallback option.

Make removal practical

  • Check a charity accepts the item before arranging delivery or collection.
  • Use your council's published recycling and bulky-waste information for items that cannot be reused.
  • Keep batteries, chemicals and electrical items out of general packing until you have checked the appropriate route.
  • Remove personal information from documents and devices before they leave your possession.

Protect meaningful decisions

Do not rush sentimental possessions simply because the moving date is close. Keep a small, clearly identified box for items needing more thought. If someone else is helping, explain what they can decide independently and what needs your agreement.

Finish by updating the inventory and removal survey. The benefit comes from actually removing items before packing, rather than moving the decision to another cupboard in the new home.

Put it into practice

Use the move, sell or donate decision helper to organise your own figures or next steps. Keep its assumptions alongside your plan.
