Measure the journey into a room as well as the room itself. A sofa can fit beside the window but still fail at a narrow landing or an awkward turn. Use the same units for furniture, door openings and access notes, and check the manufacturer's dimensions for anything you plan to buy.
Record the whole route
- Measure the clear opening with the door in its usable position, including handles and frames.
- Note corridors, stair width, turns, ceiling height and any lift restrictions.
- Record steps, gates, loading distance and surfaces outside.
- Measure the intended position, including radiators, sockets and room to walk around the item.
Take labelled photographs where permitted and sketch difficult corners. Establish which parts can safely be removed from the furniture using its instructions. Do not assume a window or balcony is an alternative route without professional assessment and permission.
A simple doorway checker can screen an obvious mismatch; it cannot prove a complex three-dimensional manoeuvre will work. Share uncertain items and measurements with the removal company before moving day and obtain a specialist assessment where needed.
