Build your budget around cash dates, not just the final total. A move may be manageable overall but difficult if a deposit, legal bill and removal balance fall due before salary or sale funds arrive. Keep a simple line for each payment, with its amount, due date and confidence level.

Separate spending from money tied up

List fees and purchases as costs. Record refundable deposits separately, including when you expect the money back. Treat an uncertain refund as unavailable until confirmed. If you are moving between rentals, do not assume the old deposit can fund the new one.

Make a useful contingency

  • Identify specific uncertainties, such as storage, waiting time or an extra overnight stay.
  • Enter a sensible scenario for each using quotes or your own spending limits.
  • Keep that allowance visible and avoid counting the same risk twice.

Review the budget when inventory, dates or quotes change. Mark paid items and replace estimates with actual bills, preserving enough notes to explain differences. Agree who can authorise extra spending on moving day so the removal crew does not receive conflicting instructions.

Put it into practice

Use the total moving cost calculator to organise your own figures or next steps. Keep its assumptions alongside your plan.
