A useful moving checklist follows your actual handover date and the work still outstanding. Start with a provisional date if necessary, but mark anything that depends on legal confirmation or an agreed tenancy arrangement. Appoint one person to maintain the shared plan so important changes do not disappear into different message threads.

Six to eight weeks before

  • List the furniture and boxes you expect to take. Include lofts, sheds and items at another address.
  • Request removal quotes using the same inventory and access details. Ask about date changes before paying a booking deposit.
  • Work out the available moving budget, including overlapping housing costs and money due before the move.
  • Check school, care, work and pet arrangements that may affect the date.

Two to four weeks before

Pack things you will not use, organise responsible disposal, and establish how keys will be released. Ask broadband and utility providers about their moving process. Create an address-change list and record confirmation references, rather than assuming every organisation updates its records automatically.

The final week

Confirm the removal crew's arrival time, parking, inventory changes and contact numbers. Keep documents, medication, chargers, valuables and an overnight bag separate. Photograph property condition and meter displays. Leave cleaning supplies accessible until the last room is empty.

Moving day and afterwards

Check every cupboard and outdoor space before leaving. Record key handover and readings at both properties. At the new home, make sleeping, washing and eating possible first; inspect important items as you unpack and report concerns promptly. Then complete remaining address updates and reconcile actual costs against your budget.

Use the planner to put these tasks against your own date, add household-specific jobs and mark who is responsible.

Put it into practice

Use the personalised moving checklist and timeline to organise your own figures or next steps. Keep its assumptions alongside your plan.
