When your moving date is uncertain, prepare tasks that remain useful while keeping date-dependent commitments flexible. Build an inventory, declutter, compare quotes and gather documents now. Delay irreversible arrangements until the relevant dates and terms are understood.
Label every commitment
Record whether the booking is provisional or confirmed, the amendment deadline, cancellation charge and contact person. Ask whether the supplier can hold a window, what happens if the move slips, and whether your quoted price depends on the original day.
Plan the gap
- Price storage and temporary accommodation separately.
- Decide which belongings must stay accessible during a delay.
- Check how changed dates affect work, school, care and pets.
- Keep enough cash for an extra payment period if the overlap cannot be avoided.
Update everyone from one shared version of the plan. A solicitor or agent confirming progress is not necessarily confirming that keys are available. Ask a clear question about what is now agreed and what remains outstanding. Once the date is settled, reconfirm the inventory, access arrangements and payment deadlines with each supplier.
