The first night has a small set of priorities: a safe place to sleep, basic washing, food, essential medication and a charged phone. Start there even if the rooms are full of boxes. Decide which areas need to be usable immediately and leave decorative unpacking for another day.

Establish the basics

  • Locate the essentials kit and set up beds or an agreed sleeping arrangement.
  • Check access, lighting and a clear route to the bathroom.
  • Keep food and care supplies in suitable storage.
  • Make sure children and pets have a calm, secure space.

Record arrival meter readings and any obvious property issue if it has not already been done. Know who to contact for an urgent building or service problem. Use appliances only when they have been safely installed and prepared according to their instructions.

Keep the entrance and escape routes clear of packaging. Put keys and important documents in one secure, known place. Make a short list of issues for tomorrow, then stop unpacking at a reasonable point. The next day's work will be easier once the household has slept and can find basic supplies.
