Most new qualifying private lets in Scotland use a private residential tenancy, but older or different accommodation arrangements need their own check. Identify the agreement before deciding notice dates or using a rental-cost example.

Prepare the move

  • Read the agreement and confirm the actual rent and deposit.
  • Record the notice and delivery requirements that apply.
  • Arrange an inventory and condition check at handover.
  • Keep deposit, payment and correspondence records securely.

Official guidance states that deposits can be up to two months' rent and describes prohibited starting or renewal charges. A private residential tenancy tenant normally gives at least 28 days' written notice, with delivery and agreement details affecting timing. These summaries do not cover every tenancy type or exception.

Use Scottish tenancy-agreement guidance, deposit information and ending a private tenancy for the applicable rules. Plan Council Tax and household bills using the actual property arrangements. The moving tools can record confirmed dates and costs, but cannot determine whether your notice is legally valid.
